Method for Accepting/Rejecting Marriage Proposals

The Problem

You are a young, single woman. There are, say, n suitors from which you are to select the best husband. After having dated the first suitor (without having met any of the others), you must decide whether or not you want to spend your life with that man. If you do, the dating season is over (you marry). If you do not, you get to date the second suitor, and, again, you must decide whether or not he is to be your husband.

The process continues until you make a positive decision. You are not allowed to change your mind-- once a suitor has been rejected, that suitor is permanently eliminated from the choices.

The question is this: What is your optimal strategy, assuming you wish to maximize your chances of selecting the "best" suitor-- and what is the probability of that best strategy working?

How do we choose a mate?
